چکیده

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus has long been recognized as a major cause of mortality and morbidity. The true frequency of the disorder is difficult to estimate because of differing diagnostic criteria but it is clearly the most common of the serious metabolic disorders occurring in roughly I to 4 percent of the U.S. population. It is a leading cause of mortality in this country, taking over 300,000 lives a year. Chronic complications of diabetes account for 50 % of lower limb amputations, 20% of end-stage renal failure and diabetes has become the leading cause of blindness in the U.S. Diabetes also accounts for 10 % of all in-patient hospital days in the U.S. and estimates of its annual contribution to the nation’s health-care bill range from $5 to 10 billion.

The Effect of Swedish Massage on Glycohemoglobin in Children with Diabetes Mellitus

Objectives: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most common endocrine disease in children. Massage therapy can improve glucose metabolism in DM. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Swedish massage on the Glycohemoglobin (HbA1c) in children with DM. Methods: This study was an semi-experimental (clinical trial) conducted on thirty-six children, 6-12 years old with (DM), recruited fro...

Is glycohemoglobin testing useful in diabetes mellitus? Lessons from the diabetes control and complications trial.

To address the question, Do laboratory tests cost money or save money? we have used as a model for discussion a common chronic disease, diabetes mellitus, and a widely used laboratory test, that for glycohemoglobin, a measure of long-term glycemia used to manage diabetic patients. Diabetes mellitus is serious, highly prevalent, and costly. In 1992, $1 of every $7 spent on health in the US was f...

Glycohemoglobin: a primary predictor of the development or reversal of complications of diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus is a major health problem worldwide with long-term micro- and macrovascular complications responsible for a majority of its morbidity and mortality. The development and progression of these complications relate strongly to glycemic control. METHODS We reviewed the literature extensively for studies that relate glycemic control to the development and progression of...

Increased fetal hemoglobin in insulin-treated diabetes mellitus contributes to the imprecision of glycohemoglobin measurements.

An increased prevalence of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) has been described in pediatric insulin-dependent patients. The popular electroendosmotic method for glycohemoglobin includes HbF. In an adult population comprising 50 insulin-treated and 57 non-insulin-treated diabetic patients and 57 control subjects, we measured HbF by HPLC and measured glycohemoglobin by both HPLC and an electroendosmotic me...

Electrospray mass spectrometry for measurement of glycohemoglobin.

With the publication of the results of the landmark 9-year Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), the importance of Hb A1c/glycohemoglobin testing in diabetes was firmly established. The DCCT showed, at least in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, that the risk for development and progression of the chronic complications of diabetes is closely related to the degree of m...

Hemoglobin A1 in hemolysates from healthy and insulin-dependent diabetic children, as determined with a temperature-controlled minicolumn assay.

We report age-specific glycohemoglobin values for nondiabetic infants, children, and young adults. These values were determined with an ion-exchange "mini-column" in a specially designed and constructed water bath that maintains column temperature at 23 +/- 0.1 degrees C. Two in-house-prepared controls with glycohemoglobin content amounting to 6.36% and 11.87% of total hemoglobin, stored at -20...
